A pregnant Instagram star and her unborn child have been killed during a police shootout.

Kathlen de Oliveira Romeu, 24, was hit by a stray bullet during the firefight – just hours after posting photos of her baby bump on the social media platform.

The expectant mum was gunned down on Tuesday in Lins de Vasconcelos in Brazil – nine miles west of Rio de Janeiro.

She was rushed to hospital, but died before she arrived.

Kathlen, who had recently moved away from the neighbourhood because of the violence, shared her pregnancy journey with her 20,000 followers.

She also revealed the possible names for the child – Maya if it was a girl and Zyon for a boy.

Moments before she was shot, the Brazilian influencer had revealed she had started to feel pregnancy signs such as "lion’s hunger" and morning sickness.

Police confirmed Kathlen's death during a gunfight between officers and a criminal gang. It added that an investigation into who shot her would be launched.

A motorway had to close near the district after the killing sparked an angry protest.

"This genocide must end. There are no words that can console the family of Kathlen Romeu and so many other families."

Kathlen’s partner and dad-to-be, Marcelo Ramos, said in a touching tribute: "My love will never be forgotten, you and Maya/Zayon will always live inside of me.

"The ground has been taken from beneath my feet. Sometimes it’s hard to understand God’s will, but I know you’re better than us.

"Here I will only miss you and the memories of you, the most radiant and lively person I’ve met in my life."

Kathlen, who was just three months pregnant, revealed she was expecting on Instagram last week, with an image of her holding her stomach with one hand and her partner with the other.
