Prince William and Kate Middleton told their son George he would one day become King when he celebrated his seventh birthday, a new book has claimed.

The eldest son of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge reportedly had his royal bloodline explained to him slightly later in life than what's usual for the family.

His father William wanted to give his son "the precious gift of normality" and provide him with as normal a childhood as possible, the Mirror reports.

Author Robert Lacey describes the protective father's wishes in his new book Battle of Brothers, released today, as well as revealing an array of other royal insights.

Lacey writes: "From George's earliest days, William made no secret of his wish to spare his firstborn the casual initiation – or non-initiation – that he felt he had suffered as a child."

Speaking to BBC royal correspondent Nicholas Witchell, Prince William commented: "There'll be a time and a place to bring George up and understand how he fits in in the world.

"Right now it's just a case of keeping a secure, stable environment around him and showing as much love as I can as a father…

"I want to bring my children up as good people with the idea of service and duty to others."

The book alleges that young George was unaware of the significance of posing for the iconic 'Four Monarchs' photograph, which featured the young Prince standing next to the Queen, Prince Charles and Prince William in December 2019.

Lacey writes that George was pulled away from the Christmas party and told it was time to spend a couple of minutes showing love and respect to his 'Gan-Gan', The Queen.

George was reportedly unaware why he was selected to be in the photograph and why that particular group had been chosen for a photo.

Robert Lacey says that the conversation explaining his royal future and bloodline happened "sometime around the boy's seventh birthday' in summer 2020.

The author writes: "William's aim as a father, the prince stressed, was to give his son a 'normal family upbringing' enabling the monarchy to 'stay relevant and keep up with modern times'."
