Princess Diana’s ex-lover James Hewitt helps rescue locals in war-torn Ukraine

James Hewitt, the former lover of the late Princess Diana, is understood to have put his neck on the line in Ukraine in a bid to save vulnerable people.

The 64-year-old has set up the not-for-profit, called Humanitarian Online Payments or HOP, to drive into Ukraine to pick people up.

Then, in convoys as long as nine vehicles they troop back out of the country and into safety.

He’s doing the work alongside Mikey Stewart-Richardson – the son of the man who set up a similar 1990s operation, Afghan Mother and Child Rescue.

In the past, he has suffered a stroke and a heart attack but that hasn’t stopped him from doing what he thinks is right.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, a source close to the former military man said: “'He's doing something useful”.

As an officer in the Household Cavalry, Hewitt is understood to have had a five-year affair with the Princess of Wales between 1986 and 1991.

Diana and Hewitt’s relationship was confirmed during an interview with Martin Bashir during their infamous Newsnight interview.

Speaking about their project Hewitt and Stewart-Richardson wrote online: “We visit all parts of Ukraine, including the areas close to the front line, to find, help and assist in collecting the young, old and infirm Ukrainians who wish to flee Putin.

“It's essential work and we're humbled to play a small part in the incredible story of the charity, Operation SafeDrop.

As reported by MailOnline, Hewitt has made two drops of his own and found them “very fulfilling”, according to a pal who spoke to the outlet.

Speaking about the project, Mr Stewart-Richardson wrote on Facebook: “I can't understand why Putin's Russia is trying to take over Ukraine – Putin obviously thought it would be a walk in the park but he has seriously miscalculated.

“The Ukrainian army has forced the Russians out of the Kyiv sector but what the Ukrainians then found was a catalogue of rape, torture, summary executions and the most heinous war crimes.

“When I saw how this evil man, Putin, wages war, my mind was immediately made up to help the Ukrainians in any way that I could.
