Princess Diana’s one-of-a-kind car with major price tag set to go on auction

Princess Diana was known for her love of cars and whilst other members of the Royal Family preferred to have a chauffeur, the people's princess enjoyed driving her own vehicle from time to time.

Prince William has even previously shared that his mother Diana loved to sing while driving him and his brother Prince Harry.

Speaking on Time to Walk for Apple Fitness+, he shared that one of the songs he remembered most was Tina Turner's The Best.

Her unique car, which was driven by the Princess in the 1980s, is due to be auctioned on Saturday, August 27, at Silverstone racing circuit in Northamptonshire.

But what car did the Princess drive and how much will it cost at auction?

Here's everything you need to know.

What car did Princess Diana drive?

Princess Diana drove a one-of-a-kind black Ford Escort RS Turbo Series One.

The vehicle belonged to the Princess between 1985 and 1988, and is one of 130 lots that will go on sale on Saturday.

The car is thought to be the only example of the model made in black, according to Silverstone Auctions.

The auctioneers told Reuters that the Royal Family's police guard asked for the vehicle to be painted black instead of the usual white "for discretion".

They added: "All the other members of the royal family would be driving around London in the back… of an official car… and she's driving in a car… that you would see on a housing estate not outside the palace."

During her lifetime, Diana had three Ford Escorts and the make was said to be one of the Princess' favourite – taking just two years for the Escort to be crowned the best-selling car in Britain.

Other auctions expected to take place on the day include a Rolls-Royce convertible which was once owned by Bee Gee Maurice Gibb, who sadly passed away in 2003.

The late Bee Gee star's vehicle is listed with a guide price of £100,000 to £115,000.

How much is the car expected to be auctioned for?

Silverstone Auctions have stated that they expect the unique car to fetch more than £100,000 on Saturday.

At the time of auction, the 1.6 litre car only has 25,000 miles on the clock which makes the hefty price tag seem reasonable to some for the one-off vehicle.

Have any of Princess Diana's vehicles been auctioned before?

Princess Diana's beloved 1981 Ford Escort Mk 3 Ghia, which was brought for her as an engagement present from Prince Charles, was auctioned last year as part of a specialist Royalty auction after having disappeared from public view for over twenty years.

The car was gifted to Diana two months before the Royal Wedding and she used the vehicle until August 1982.

Auctioneers estimated that the vehicle would reach £40,000 at auction, but it actually sold for £47,000.

When is the anniversary of Princess Diana's death?

Princess Diana sadly passed away following a tragic car accident in Paris, France, on August 31, 1997.

The mother-of-two was killed as she travelled through the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in the French city while her driver was fleeing the paparazzi.

The crash also resulted in the deaths of her partner Dodi Fayed and their driver, Henri Paul.

Diana's funeral was watched by millions all over the world on September 6 as the event was televised.

In the UK alone, viewers peaked at 32.10 million which was one of the nation's highest viewing figures ever.
