A PRISONER was paid a huge £3.6million compensation for a severe injury suffered behind bars.
The sum was ten times higher than any payout in the previous three years.
And it bumped the total of taxpayers’ cash going on jail compo in the last 12 months to £7.5million.
That is £3million up on the previous year, the annual accounts of the Prison and Probation Service show.
Some £85million was paid over three years for incidents such as attacks on staff and prisoners.
James Roberts, of the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “Payments like this will leave taxpayers concerned.
“Governors must keep things under control and ensure that as few of these compo payouts are warranted as possible.”
The Ministry of Justice said: “We only settle where it’s likely to save taxpayers’ money.
“Even then we always seek to make sure debts to victims and the courts are paid before the offender sees a penny.”
