Pub landlord slams scathing one-star TripAdvisor review with savage comeback

The owner of a pub has savagely shut down a critical review left on TripAdvisor and has picked apart every part of their complaint.

Owner of the Jamaica Inn in Cornwall, Allen Jackson, wasn't impressed by the customer's comments on his business after she detailed the time she visited to have a coffee with her partner and parents.

She wrote a lengthy review, rating the Inn only one star out of a possible five, slamming the apparent slow service she received and claimed she and her loved ones waited 50 minutes for two coffees.

Mr Jackson then responded to the customer's accusations and even challenged her to tell him the exact date and time of her visit so he could check CCTV, reports Cornwall Live.

The TripAdvisor review began: "I came here last weekend because I wanted to take my partner who has never been before. I can safely say we won't be coming back."

The customer claimed the group had tried to order two coffees, both through the app and with staff members, but were left waiting 50 minutes for the drinks to arrive.

She said when they told a waitress they had been waiting for half an hour, the staff member "accused them of lying", as she wrote: "She began to walk away whilst we were complaining to her and she said 'whatever' and something else under her breath.

"We were absolutely disgusted by this.

"I highly recommend not visiting this place. It's a tourist attraction and it's a rip off. You are much better spending your time and money in smaller businesses in Cornwall, or even Subway which is down the road."

But Mr Jackson responded, saying: "I have looked into this lengthy diatribe of yours about 4 cups of coffee and it amounts to a complaint that your second coffees were too slow. "

He then highlighted: "It is also clear your problem with these first coffees was not caused by us but due to your unfortunate inability to use the App to order them which you say 'took a long time as it was very slow'.

"It cannot be slow – it either works or it doesn't work and that depends on the user – and that's you!"

He then said he wanted to get to the bottom of the "confusing and unlikely time spans", asking for more details of the visit so he could check CCTV to see if the account left on TripAdvisor was correct.

The owner stated: "To date I must have similarly challenged at least seven or eight other guests who have come up with unlikely stories and not one has had the nerve (or decency) to back up what they have said by providing what is in effect evidence. Will you be the first to provide it?"

He added that the majority of customers leave four or five star reviews, leading to the pub receiving a TripAdvisor 2019 Certificate of Excellence, which he says is "currently still valid".

The customer has since said she was "absolutely disgusted" by the response and insisted her review was a true account of their experience.

She added: "He is damaging the reputation of Cornwall and he is a bully. I am not the first person this has happened to, if you read other reviews, he has responded in a similar way."

Jamaica Inn has been contacted for comment.
