Vladimir Putin's Russian troops are "suffering from exhaustion" and a "shortage of weapons" in their ongoing invasion of Ukraine, according to a former head of Joint Forces Command.

Sir Richard Barrons believes both sides are struggling in equal measure as the cold weather approaches, with any kind of outcome still some way off.

Speaking to Sky News on Sunday, the 63-year said: "Overall I think both sides are suffering from exhaustion and a degree of shortage of weapons and ammunitions.

"Both sides are confronting the reality of a long, hard 2022, and a long, hard winter to come."

He added: "Neither side is any way ready to give up or any way close to the sort of victory that they would both claim."

Mr Barrons went on to discuss the three issues affecting Putin's army at present.

"The fight on the battlefield for territory, the Russian effort to defeat the Ukrainian popular will to keep fighting the war, and the Russian attempt to try and weaken international support for Ukraine," he said.

Also on Sunday, Ukraine's head of military intelligence claimed Putin is currently using at least three body doubles as question marks over his poor health continue.

Major General Kyrylo Budanov said: "We know specifically about three people that keep appearing, but how many there are, we don't know?

"They all had plastic surgery to look alike.

"The one thing that gives them away is their height. It's visible in videos and pictures. Also gesturing, body language and earlobes, since they are unique for every person."
