Dramatic footage showed the moment a drug trafficker was tackled to the ground by sunbathers after he landed on shore with boat packed with up to 800kg of cannabis.

Sunbathers in Sorvilan in the southern province of Granada, Spain, unexpectedly became involved in a tense pursuit of an alleged drug smuggler on Saturday afternoon.

Video footage showed a patrol boat chasing a suspicious vessel off the coast from Melicena beach before it began to quickly flee straight towards the shore.

In the video, the maritime police’s sirens could be heard blaring as the boat crashed on to the popular beach at speed, knocking one beachgoer cleanly off their feet.

Two alleged drug smugglers jumped out of the boat and attempted to escape on foot, but dozens of brave sunbathers sprung into action and chased one of the suspects.

The first suspect was eventually tackled to the ground by the crowd of crime-fighting beachgoers as he attempted to make a run for it across the sandy beach.

The fearless crowd stopped soaking up the rays and managed to pin the suspect to the ground, until Civil Guard officers arrived on the scene just minutes later to arrest him.

Sunbathers kept an eye on the whereabouts of the second suspect, who had fled on foot in the opposite direction before disappearing behind a rock.

In the footage, beachgoers later crowded around the abandoned boat (pictured) to see what was on board, and to their surprise, they discovered more than two dozen brown packages

It was later confirmed that more than 800kg of cannabis divided into 25 packages (pictured) were found in the stranded boat, according to local news site 20Minutos

After police officers detained the first suspect, the other man was reportedly arrested by police near the beach.

In the tense footage, beachgoers later crowded around the abandoned boat to see what was on board, and to their surprise, they discovered more than two dozen brown packages.

It was later confirmed that more than 800kg of cannabis divided into 25 packages were found in the stranded boat, according to local news site 20Minutos.  

Civil Guard association Jucil later praised the actions of the crime-fighting sunbathers, tweeting: ‘Thank you all, because without you, it would not be possible.’

Police later confirmed that one of the beachgoers who had intervened was an off-duty police sergeant.

Police are continuing to investigate where the drugs came from and where they were being delivered.
