Britain will plunge into the deep freeze once again this weekend as icy blue and light yellow colours return to the weather map, which shows the scene on Sunday morning

Despite warm air from the Atlantic bringing toasty temperatures as high as 18C in some areas yesterday, it's a chilly outlook for the next few days.

Rain, hail and sleet will fall in Scotland tonight, with 2cm snow forecast to settle on hills, and the wintry showers are set continue into tomorrow.

Met Office meteorologist Aidan McGivern said: "Cloud breaks will be in short supply this evening, with a few areas of cloud and a dribble of rain fall – not very much at all.

"But for Scotland it is expected to be a very lively night with 70mph winds gusts for the northern Isles where we have these frequent showers moving through.

"The wind will ease as we go into Saturday, snow over the hills first thing but the snow level tends to lift.

"Frequent showers but some bright spells in between especially for eastern and southern Scotland, parts of Northern Ireland."

SUNNY SUNDAY

The rest of Britain can look forward to a cool but sunny day tomorrow.

But the temperature is set to plummet on Saturday evening, with -2C forecast in Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland and even parts of England struggling to get above freezing.

And the worst of the wintry weather will blow across Britain over the weekend.

Mr McGivern added: "Elsewhere a lot of fine weather to come. A dry day, plenty of sunshine but it will feel colder and it will feel particularly cold on Sunday morning – a frost in place under those clear skies, particularly for northern Ireland, southern Scotland and central parts of England and Wales.

"There will be some lingering cloud across southern counties of England first thing Sunday but we soon say goodbye to that because England and Wales it's simply a sunny Sunday.

"But for Scotland and Northern Ireland, cloudier skies and some heavy rainfall moving through first thing Sunday.

"Followed by sunny spells, scattered showers and that brisk wind."
