  • Britons are urged to stop using a set of £29.95 fairy lights immediately
  • Fault with the wiring of the lights means they could cause ‘electric shock’
  • Customers told to contact the retailer for further advice amid the recall

A watchdog has issued an urgent recall for £29.95 boxes of ten ‘Flickering Bulb’ Christmas lights because they pose a ‘serious risk’ of electric shock.

Britons have been urged to stop using the lights ‘immediately’ because they don’t meet safety standards, according to the Office for Produce Safety and Standards (OPSS).

A fault with the wiring of the lights, which can be bought online at Glow.co.uk and Amazon, means ‘screwing or unscrewing the bulb may cause electrocution’.

The OPSS said: ‘This product presents a serious risk of electric shock as the screw wall of the bulb housing is live, instead of neutral.

‘As a result, a consumer screwing or unscrewing the bulb may cause electrocution. The product does not meet the requirements of the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.

‘If you believe you have an affected product stop using it immediately and contact the retailer for further advice.’

Electrical Safety First said the models affected are: SKU: FLICKBULBSTR; ASIN: B09G6PFX6P; Barcode: 5060147014471.

Electrical Safety First’s nationwide warning today added: ‘We strongly recommend that anyone who discovers they have an electrical item that has been recalled should stop using it until it has been checked by the manufacturer.’

Online adverts claim the lights ‘create an amazing warming glow with incredibly realistic flickering flame effect fairy lights’.

The lights, which mean to look like flames that flicker like fire, are set along a 5.5ft length of wiring. Each light ‘flickers as realistically as an actual flame, emitting a stunning glow,’ according to the advert.

‘Suitable for use both indoor and outdoor, these string lights will give an incredible flame effect without the fire hazard,’ it added.

‘The lights are also connectable allowing you to connect up to ten strings together from a single plug to create a whopping seventeen metres of light. Use them throughout the home to add a warm glow to living areas, or create an amazing festive feature.’
