A VIDEO circulating online showing Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin kneeling on George Floyd's neck while he was in handcuffs has sparked fury across the world.
A petition asking for justice for the 46-year-old has gained hundreds of thousands of signatures.
What is the Justice for George Floyd petition?
On May 25, Minneapolis Police responded to a call that a man had used a forged cheque at a grocery store.
Video footage originally posted on Facebook shows George Floyd in handcuffs with Derek Chauvin's knee on his neck.
Mr Floyd is heard repeatedly telling officers "I can't breathe".
His pleas are ignored by the officer who asks him: "You a tough guy. Tough guy, huh?"
Mr Floyd also begs the police in the video saying: "Don't kill me!"
His death has triggered anger across the globe with protests in US cities.
A petition asking for justice for Mr Floyd has gained over 800,000 signatures in two days.
According to the petition: "The officer put his knee on George’s neck choking him for minutes on minutes while George screamed that he could not breathe. Bystanders beg for the police officer to take his knee off George’s neck, but the officer didn’t listen and continued to choke him."
It adds: "We are trying to reach the attention of Mayor Jacob Frey and DA Mike Freeman to beg to have the officers involved in this disgusting situation fired and for charges to be filed immediately."
Although the officers involved have since been fired, an update from the petition says "the next step is to get them charged" for the murder of Mr Floyd.
