A wife in the United States has been accused of setting her sleeping husband’s head on fire because she thought he poisoned her chicken wings.

Tuhonsty Marie Smith, 29, is said to have poured a cup of lighter fluid on Henry Williams and used a lighter to ignite it in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

He said he woke up to find his hair alight which he desperately tried to put out with his bare hands.

Mr Williams said he ran to his three-month-old daughter's room, grabbed her, and raced out of the home, CBS 58 reported.

Emergency services arrived at the scene in the early hours of Thursday, June 3, and took him to hospital.

He suffered severe burns to his ears, hands, chest, neck, and face.

Smith was arrested and reportedly told police she had suspected him of putting poison on her food earlier in the day, according to the New York Post.

But she reportedly claimed she did not plan to kill him.

Mr Williams claimed the couple had been in a relationship for more than eight years.

But he said he felt his wife’s behaviour had recently changed and she had been acting strangely for up to four months.

According to local media, he said it had increased after he told her he planned to leave her and move out of their home.

He said they had got into a fight on the night she set him on fire as a result, it is claimed.

Mr Williams also alleged she had been taking more medication than she was prescribed, and was concerned she had been huffing paint in their basement, Newsweek reported.

Denise Wilson, who owns the property where the couple live, said: "Because I've known Henry since he was a kid, just heartbroken for him.

"The house is just a thing and that's why you have insurance but as long as he's going to be ok, that's my main concern.

"I'm just glad he was able to get the baby out and that he's going to be ok. It’ll be a long road to recovery with his burns but ultimately he'll be ok."

Smith appeared in court on Wednesday, where it was decided she will have a competency evaluation.

She faces charges including arson of a building, first-degree recklessly endangering safety, and mayhem.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Mr Williams.
